OPHTHALMOLOGY

Ophthalmology is the surgical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and correction of vision problems.

Regular and comprehensive eye examinations are part of routine care in primary care, as many eye diseases are silent or asymptomatic. Diseases with the potential for blindness, ocular manifestations of a systemic disease, or signs of tumors or other brain abnormalities may be detected during the ophthalmological examination.

The complete ophthalmologic evaluation consists of external examination of the eyeball, testing of visual acuity, pupillary function, extraocular motility, visual field, intraocular pressure, and examination of ocular structures through the dilated pupil (fundus of the eye).
